DAILY READINGS: Joshua 13; Isaiah 9:8 to 10:4; Luke 24:36-53

Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as He is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as He is pure. 1 John 3:2-3

In a world that is hopeless we have this purifying hope. It is to be with Him forever. It is called a blessed and living hope. This I can grasp quite well. But there is more in these verses, “ We shall be like Him.” We who are so carnal and selfish; we that sin in thought, word and deed, are going to be like Him? Only God and the power of the Gospel of His grace could ever accomplish this. All praise to Him!—Harold G. Smith

O happy day that fixed my choice on Thee, my Saviour and my God!
Well may this glowing heart rejoice, and tell its raptures all abroad.—Edward Rimmault

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 11-12; Isaiah 8:5 to 9:7; Luke 24:13-35

And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever…that there should be time no longer. Revelation 10:5-6

What an awesome scene. A mighty angel stands on land and sea and lifts his voice. With his declaration, time ends and then eternity! This day is coming and it may be quite near. How terrible shall be the end of those who do not accept the invitation of the Lord Jesus while there is yet time. Come to the Saviour today. "Behold, now is the accepted time; behold now is the day of Salvation," (2 Cor. 6:2). —E. MacLelland

And oh, what a weeping and wailing
As the lost were told of their fate;
They cried for the rocks and the mountains,
They prayed, but their prayer was too late! —Bert Shadduck

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 10; Isaiah 7 to 8:4; Luke 23:47 to 24:12

John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not. John 1:26

Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. John 4:22

For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Acts 17:23a

Every instance of witnessing has its own issues. With those sent by the Pharisees, it was pride and trust in man-made tradition; with the woman it was a religious facade disguising her shameful sin; with the Athenians, it was meaningless, pretentious debate. Christ and His Gospel is the answer to all of these issues. We need to declare Him fully and faithfully. —Mark Kolchin

We’ve a message to give to the nations, that the Lord who reigns up above,
Has sent us His Son to save us, and show us that God is love. —H. Nichol

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 9; Isaiah 6; Luke 23:13-46

For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. Luke 7:8

It was an awkward situation for the Jewish leaders; they didn’t believe in Jesus Christ, yet the centurion who had been kind to them requested them to ask Jesus to heal his ill servant. The centurion’s humility was evident; he did not ask Christ to come to his gentile home. His knowledge of authority and responsibility was also commendable. What is the lesson for us? We too must be under God ordained authority to honour God and serve others in His name. The only other system of authority is satanic and the believer cannot honour God while under Satan’s rule. —Warren Henderson

My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad, the honours of Thy name.—Charles Wesley

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 8; Isaiah 5; Luke 22:54 to 23:12

Thy way O God is in the sanctuary…Thy way is in the sea…and Thy footsteps are not known. Psalm 77:13, 19

Our Lord's rightful home is in the sanctuary, in the true sanctuary, heaven itself. But He willingly came to this little world stained by sin, and battered by storms. One day, to His disciples’ astonishment, He came to them walking on the stormy waves of Galilee. But with greater astonishment still they saw Him sink beneath the waters at Golgotha where He could say, “All Thy waves and Thy billows are gone over Me,” (Ps. 42:7). How grateful we should be today that “Many waters cannot quench love,” (Song of Sol. 8:7). His way in that sea has brought us into His sanctuary. —S. M.

How deep, how dark the waters that swept o’er Him in the flood;
How high, ark-like, the safe retreat that shuts us in with God.—Author Unknown

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 7; Isaiah 3-4; Luke 22:31-53

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Psalms 119:11

There are three important things in this text. First there is an important possession—God’s Word. Then there is an important place where we are to hide the Word—our heart. Finally there is an important purpose to this activity—to keep from sinning. Someone has anonymously and correctly stated, “The best book in the world is the Bible. The best place to put it is in the heart. The best reason for putting it there is that it saves us from sinning against God.” By way of further emphasis D. L. Moody said: “Sin will keep you from the Book, but the Book will keep you from sin.” —W. Ross Rainey

Thy Word is a lamp to my feet, a light to my path alway,
To guide and to save me from sin, and show me the heav’nly way.—H. O. Selfers

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 5:13 to 6:27; Isaiah 2; Luke 22:1-30

For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Romans 15:4

Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. 1 Corinthians 10:11

Why read the Old Testament? The New Testament gives two reasons. First, to give us hope and secondly, that by heeding the examples in it, we might be holy. In a hopeless and unholy world, we need to read the Word—all of it! —Rex Trogdon

With such a blessed hope in view, we would more holy be,
More like our risen, glorious Lord, whose face we soon shall see.—Robert Boswell

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 4 to 5:12; Isaiah 1; Luke 21:5-38

For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been His counsellor? Romans 11:34

Men place great importance on earthly intelligence, but this question causes us to think about the “mind” of the Lord. His vast intellect has complete knowledge of every aspect of the universe from the microscope to the telescope. In addition to the material universe, He knows, in absolute detail, the lives, motives and thoughts of every person that has ever or will ever live. No wonder the inspired writer says, “Who has been His counsellor?” —S. D. B.

Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity. —Reginald Heber

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 3; Hosea 11:12 to 14:9; Luke 20:20 to 21:4

The elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us today before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies. 1 Samuel 4:3b

Routed by their enemies, Israel discerned that their defeat was ordained by the Lord. Instead of examining themselves to see where they had sinned, they tried to manipulate God into helping them by bringing the Ark to the army. Although it was the Almighty’s symbolic throne in that day, this box could never save them. Neither will man’s programs or methods deliver the Church from its problems. We must repent and trust in the Lord alone. The answer lies in a personal God, never in an “it”. —K. R. Keyser

The Lord alone defends His own, when earth or hell oppresses;
Omnipotent Redeemer, our ransomed souls adore Thee. —C. Wesley

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 2; Hosea 10 to 11:11; Luke 20:1-19

If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself. Philemon 1:17

Christian partnership is a divinely provided fellowship which needs careful and prayerful nurturing. The Church works together with different backgrounds; ethnic, social, male and female. We have different spiritual gifts and natural talents; some public, some private, but all needed and important. We have different duties; communicating truth, encouraging and comforting one another but all praying for each other. Our goals are simple; to glorify God in our hearts and lives; minister to the needs of the family of Christ and serve a loving Master. —Milton Haack

It pays to serve Jesus, it pays every day;
Though the pathway to glory may sometimes be drear,
You’ll be happy each step of the way. —Frank Huston
