DAILY READINGS: 1 Samuel 17:32 to 18:5; Isaiah 58; Romans 4:1-22

Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as He is. 1 John 3:2

Today our limited faith has restrictions, but, one day we not only will be with Him and like Him, but we will see Him as He is; with unclouded vision. Soon we will be invited to the wedding feast, not just as guests but as His bride, attired in pure white, just for Him. A mutual love and eternally abiding fidelity. Oh how we long for that day to dawn! —Milton Haack

Nothing between my soul and the Saviour,
So that His blessed face may be seen;
Nothing preventing the least of His favour,
Keep the way clear! Let nothing between. —Charles Findley

DAILY READINGS: 1 Samuel 17:1-31; Isaiah 56:9 to 57:21; Romans 3

Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Isaiah 55:1

Today’s verse invites all who are thirsty and hungry for salvation to come to God and hear what He says so that their soul may live. God abundantly pardons the sinner. Redemption of sin is only through Christ. Declare before God your faith in the Lord Jesus and confess Him as your Redeemer, and you'll receive life eternal today. —Jerry Proctor

Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come. —Charlotte Elliott

DAILY READINGS: 1 Samuel 16; Isaiah 55 to 56:8; Romans 2

So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me. Ezekiel 33:7

God made Ezekiel a watchman to his people. As such God held him accountable to faithfully convey His word. Similarly, a great responsibility has been placed upon us, to faithfully present the Gospel, knowing that a day of accountability lies ahead. Let’s heed the warning words to Ezekiel, and take our responsibility seriously, and get back to preaching an unadulterated, soul-searching Gospel, wherever and whenever possible. —W. H. Burnett

Whosever heareth! Shout, shout the sound:
Send the blessed tidings all the world around!
Spread the joyful news, wherever man is found:
Whosoever will may come. —P. P. Bliss

DAILY READINGS: 1 Samuel 15; Isaiah 54; Romans 1:18-32

And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. Luke 18:13

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

The tax collector did not confess each sin individually—he could never remember them all anyway. But he confessed his utter unworthiness, “I am a sinner!” That is what we do, when by faith we first trust Christ as our Saviour. After that however, when as a Christian I sin, I must confess each sin individually. Sin, in a believer’s life breaks fellowship with the Lord, and that can only be restored by repentance and confession. —David Croudace

See if there be, some wicked way in me;
Cleanse me from every sin and set me free. —J. E. Orr

Lord’s Day, August 7, 2011

DAILY READINGS: 1 Samuel 14; Isaiah 52:13 to 53:12; Romans 1:1-17

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.Romans 6:6

It is wonderful that Christ died for me and not just for my sins. He died for me, as my Substitute. He died as me, as my Representative. Forgiveness saves me from the penalty of my sins, but my death with Him delivers me from the power of sin. The "old man" is all that we were in Adam. The "new man" of Ephesians 4:24, is all that we are in Christ. We should be living by faith in the new man and not in the old man. Can we say today, “I am crucified with Christ?” (Galatians 2:20).—Harold G. Smith

Buried with Christ and dead unto sin;
Dying but living with Jesus within. —William Kirkpatrick

DAILY READINGS: 1 Samuel 13; Isaiah 52:1-12; 2 Cor. 12:14 to 13:14

All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk. Numbers 6:4

There was nothing sinful in partaking of the fruit of the vine. However, the Nazarite abstained in order to do something extraordinary for God. Today there are a lot of legitimate things given us to enjoy, but perhaps there are times when we need to forfeit some of these things in order to be able to serve God in a greater capacity. We live in a time when personal pleasure is the defining ideal of many. As believers are we prepared to sacrifice so that God may be glorified?—R. Surgenor

Lord, we are Thine; Thy claims we own,
Ourselves to Thee we humbly give;
Reign Thou within our hearts alone,
And make us to Thy glory live. —James G. Deck

DAILY READINGS: 1 Samuel 11-12; Isaiah 51:9-23; 2 Cor. 12:1-13

For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better. Philippians 1:23

With Christ! It is where we will be one day, and maybe soon. Yes, there is the human side of bereavement, when for a while a door closes upon those who enter the Lord’s presence. Yes, it hurts us. But they have gone where we are going. And day by day we are nearer home, too. Meanwhile, we are here to serve Him, are we not? —Mark Fenn

Here in the body pent,
Absent from Him I roam,
Yet nightly pitch my moving tent,
A day’s march nearer home. —James Montgomery

DAILY READINGS: 1 Samuel 9:15 to 10:27; Isaiah 50 to 51:8; 2 Cor. 11

Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee. Psalms 63:3

How can we sinful humans bless God? From this verse it seems that when we pray to God, lifting our hands, lifting our needs, lifting our families in prayer to Him, this is blessing Him. If the “greatest service we can do to God is to trust Him” then leaning hard on Him today, trusting Him hourly, counting on Him alone to satisfy our needs—this is blessing the Lord. How joyfully then can we lift our voices with the Psalmist to sing. —M. MacMullen

Lord, upon our blindness, Thy pure radiance pour;
For Thy lovingkindness we would love Thee more;
And when clouds are drifting dark across the sky,
Then, the veil uplifting, Father, be Thou nigh.—William W. How

DAILY READINGS: 1 Samuel 8 to 9:14; Isaiah 49; 2 Cor. 10

For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 1 Timothy 6:7

Much of the world's activity is driven by the pursuit of wealth. Those with little would like to have some and those who have much would like to get more. People ought to heed Paul’s words, they that will be rich have "pierced themselves through with many sorrows”(1 Tim. 6:10). It is also true that at the end of life it will all be left behind. The Lord Jesus invites you today to put your trust in Him as your personal Saviour! Then you will have an inheritance incorruptible, undefiled that fades not away—an eternal possession. —Jim Paul

If I gained the world but lost the Saviour!
Would my gain be worth the life long strife?
Are all earthly pleasures worth comparing?
For a moment with a Christ filled life! —Anna Olander

DAILY READINGS: 1 Samuel 6-7; Isaiah 48; 2 Corinthians 9

And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. John 1:36, 37

That perfect life of the Lord Jesus, which manifested both glory and virtue at every step, stresses the two vital components that produce true salvation and discipleship in any who will hear—His peerless conduct and His powerful Word. We are to do and teach and so emulate the pattern of the One whose steps we are to follow. A holy walk and holy talk—inseparable traits that will help others find and follow Him. —Mark Kolchin

You are writing a Gospel, a chapter each day;
By things that you do; by things you say.
Others read that gospel, whether faithless or true!
Say! What is the Gospel according to you? —L. Brownlow
