The Song of Zechariah by Timothy Cross

The Song of Zechariah in Luke 1:67-79, also known as the Benedictus, is a strong contender for being the greatest hymn ever uttered by human lips. Here is no ordinary hymn, for the Bible states that it owes its origin to Zechariah’s being “filled with the Holy Spirit.” The Spirit of God gave Zechariah the words to praise God for both Who He is and what He has done by His redeeming grace: “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people…” in bequeathing to us the Benedictus in the Scriptures, God the Holy Spirit has thus given us a divine blueprint and aid for divine praise and adoration.

The Christian faith is well known for its hymns of praise, and justly so. Christians have a son to sing, a salvation to celebrate and a Saviour to extol.

Dr. Timothy Cross was born in Wales to English parents. He graduated from the University of Wales and studied theology at the University of Wales. He also trained as an RE and Games teacher at Aberystwyth University. He spent many of his formative years living in Northern Ireland and has lived in Belfast. He is an experienced preacher and has written over twenty books and numerous articles in Christian periodicals. Since 1989, he has broadcasted a Bible-based message on the South of Wales Talking Magazine. In 2002, he received an honorary doctorate of Sacred Literature for his extensive written ministry by the Christian Bible College in Rocky Mount, NC. He enjoys studying the original languages of the Bible, long distance running, cats, “wholesome comedy,” and the beaches of South Wales.

“The flesh” describes the natural man. God has no program to change the flesh. Rather He brings in something new: “and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:6). A new struggle is brought to our attention. It is no longer the new nature or the believer striving for mastery over sin in the body; it is the Holy Spirit striving against the old nature. The little boy coming home from school was beaten up by a big bully. He was on the bottom, and the big bully was pounding him very heavily. Then he looked up from his defeated position on the bottom, and saw his big brother coming. The big brother took care of the bully while the little fellow crawled up on a stump and rubbed his bruises. The believer has the Holy Spirit to deal with the flesh, that big bully. I learned along time ago that I can’t overcome it. So I have to turn it over to Somebody who can. The Holy Spirit indwells believers. He wants to do that for us, and He can!

Henry Moorhouse was an English evangelist whose life didn’t start out glorifying God. He really learned the importance of John 3:16 and of God’s love for His people. You can read more about his humble life in the Biography of Henry Moorhouse by John MacPherson. You can also read some of his work in the Collective Writings and Sermons of Henry Moorhouse. He was a very humble man and our designer Lisa (who worked extensively on both) believes these books are worth the read!

It became apparent in my study of God’s Word that those who managed to so discipline their minds talked, not to themselves, but to their immortal soul. Over a period of four or five years, I collected an astounding list of Bible passages about soul-talk and began to understand that when my soul is blessing God, I cannot be complaining, worrying, or arguing. However, I cannot bless the Lord until I cast down thoughts that exalt themselves against the knowledge of God. After I rebuke those wicked ideas, I can talk to my soul in biblical phrases somewhat like praying the words of Scripture back to God.
