DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 24; Lamentations 4-5; 2 Timothy 1

But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. Luke 24:16

And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and He vanished out of their sight. Luke 24:31

The Emmaus road had never seemed longer, and their hearts never heavier. The One they loved had been crucified, buried, and mysteriously disappeared. To their delight, a Stranger walked with them and, at their invitation, He joined them for their evening meal. When He blessed the bread they were about to eat, “Their eyes were opened, and they knew him.” What a sight! Dear child of God, stay close to Him, and you will be rewarded with His presence. The One who permits your suffering longs to give you a sight of Himself. —Arnot P. McIntee

O, soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see?

DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 23; Lamentations 3; 1 Timothy 6

Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that His hour was come that He should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved His own which were in the world, He loved them unto the end. John 13:1

Why do I love Him so little when He loves me so much? Did He not prove His love at Calvary? Does He not supply all my needs every day? Have not all of His promises come true? Then it must be me. What I need most is restoration to intimate communion. Lord help me to be like John, with his head on Christ's gentle heart experiencing and enjoying, the peace of God, which passeth all understanding. —Milton Haack

It is glory just to walk with Him, Whose blood has ransomed me;
It is joy divine to feel Him near, where’er my path may be.—Avis M. Christiansen

DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 21:19 to 22:20; Lamentations 2; 1 Timothy 5

They did not receive Him. Luke 9:53

Martha received Him into her house. Luke 10:38

Mary…sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard His word. Luke 10:39

The Samaritans did not receive Christ because He planned to go to detested Jerusalem. They missed the Lord altogether. Martha welcomed Him to her home but, preoccupied by the pressures of the moment, missed what He had to say. Mary sat at His feet transfixed by Him. No wonder that it was she who with abandon, anointed His feet with very costly perfume. How much do we appreciate the Lord Jesus Christ?—S. M.

Taken up with Thee Lord Jesus, I would be;

DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 20 to 21:18; Lamentations 1; 1 Timothy 4

See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant. Jeremiah 1:10

This was God’s mandate for Jeremiah in his time, but can be applied to every believer today. How can we pull down and destroy all around us that is anti-God? Not by holding demonstrations but by giving ourselves to prayer. I Sam 17:47 tells us “The battle is the Lord’s.” But not only should we pray, but plant, that is, passing on God’s word at every opportunity. It is through these two ministries that you will see the light of God's blessing shining in the dark corner where you live. —David Croudace

Let not fear your heart appal, naught of evil can befall,
Stronger is your God than all. Keep on praying. —R. O. Smith

DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 19; Jeremiah 52; 1 Timothy 3

Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy. 1 Timothy 6:17

Financial turmoil has affected the economies of the world. The temptation is to examine our own posessions whether it be stocks, bonds, or other investments and place our faith in them. While it may be prudent to plan for the future, we are warned not to trust in these riches, but in the living God. Why? Because "my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Phil. 4:19). No other investment can make such a claim. —Bob Cretney

Simply trusting every day, trusting through a stormy way;
Even when my faith is small, trusting Jesus that is all. —Edgar P. Stites

DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 18; Jeremiah 51:25-64; 1 Timothy 2

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20

How voluntary was the death of our Lord Jesus. Five times we read that He “gave Himself”. He gave Himself for our sins (Gal. 1.4). He gave Himself a ransom for all (1 Tim. 2.6). He loved the church and gave Himself for it (Eph. 5.25). How blessed it is to know that He gave Himself for us (Titus 2.14).But what a personal privilege to be able to say that He loved me and gave Himself for me (Gal. 2.20). —Jim Flanigan

It was for me, yes, all for me; O, love of God, so great, so free;
O, wondrous love, I’ll shout and sing, He died for me, my Lord the King.—J. M. Whyte

DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 17; Jeremiah 51:1-24; 1 Timothy 1

If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up. Daniel 3:17-18

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were threatened with a horrible death in a fiery furnace. They knew that God could deliver them, but accepted the possibility that He might allow them to enter the furnace. Their faith and confidence did not rest on the false premise that God exempts His people from the fires of affliction. May the Lord give us that spirit of submission that is ready to accept whatever He wills.—W. H. Burnett

Our times are in Thy hand, whatever they may be,
Pleasing or painful, dark or bright, what best may seem to Thee.—W. F. Lloyd

DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 15:32 to 16:20; Jer. 50:21-46; Titus 2:9 to 3:15

The LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself. Exodus 19:3-4

There is only one way for a young eagle to learn to fly. It is pushed out of its nest into thin air. The mother eagle is the safety net and the instructor while training her offspring. She will fly underneath her young with her wings spread out in order to catch a tumbling eaglet. We too, often learn the most important lessons in life while tumbling out of control only to fall into the loving and peaceful arms of the Saviour. Beloved, He will never drop you! —Warren Henderson

There on eagles’ wings we soar, and time and sense seem all no more,
Heaven comes down our souls to greet; glory crowns the mercy seat.— Hugh Stowell

DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 14:23 to 15:31; Jer. 50:1-20; Titus 1 to 2:8

And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain. 1 Corinthians 15:37

For a believer, when death comes it is like a seed put into the ground. Within the seed is potential and someday, in God’s own time a new and more glorious body will arise, sinless and deathless. The gloom that sometimes encompasses our soul is lifted when we grasp this truth. It reveals to us the wonders of God’s creative and redemptive powers. Resurrection is and will ever be a miracle of the first magnitude. —Drew Craig

Jesus is coming! The dead shall arise,
Lov’d ones shall meet in a joyful surprise,
Caught up together to Him in the skies,
Jesus is coming again. —James McGranahan
