DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 13 to 14:22; Jeremiah 49; Hebrews 13:7-25

Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee. Job 22:21

Where is true peace to be found? Not in the idyllic surroundings of an earthly paradise, not in the amassing of material treasures! The Bible’s message is that eternal peace is available to all who enter into a relationship with God, through the Lord Jesus Christ. He “made peace through the blood of His cross,” (Col. 1:20) To know Him is true peace! —George Hall

I have a peace and it’s calm as a river,
A peace that the friends of this world never knew;
My Saviour alone is its Author and Giver,
But O could I know, it was given to you! —S. O’Malley Cluff

DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 11-12; Jeremiah 48; Hebrews 12:18 to 13:6

Thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother [when] he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress. Obadiah 1:12

The disciplinary hand of God is upon a Christian you know, and you know why. Perhaps your brother has persisted in some path of disobedience, and your warnings and admonitions have gone unheeded. So what now? Shall we account ourselves to be more righteous than God, by adding our condemnation to His sorrow? God forbid, for we all would be in the same situation but for God’s preserving grace. “Even thou wast as one of them,” (vs. 11). Pray for their restoration! Pray with tears! —Rick Morse

“Father, forgive,” the Saviour said, “They know not what they do”;
His heart was moved when thus He prayed, for me, my friends, and you.—John Newton

DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 10; Jeremiah 45-47; Hebrews 12:1-17

For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Corinthians 6:20

If you are a person of average size, each day you perform some astounding functions. Truly we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Your

heart beats 103,689 times. You breathe 23,040 times. You inhale 438 cubic feet of air. Your body maintains a steady temperature of 98.6 degrees. You speak 4,800 words a day (although some have more to say). You use over 700 muscles, 7 million brain cells, and walk 7 miles. And if you are a Christian, your body belongs to God to live for His glory. —Rex Trogdon

Take my life, and let it be, consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my hands, and let them move,
At the impulse of Thy love,
At the impulse of Thy love. —Frances R. Havergal

Lord’s Day, October 9, 2011

DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 9; Jeremiah 44; Hebrews 11:17-40

Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him. Genesis 40:23

Joseph gave the chief butler one request, “Remember me.” But he forgot! Our Lord has given us that same request, “Remember me.” Are we as guilty as the butler or do we “Remember Him” each Lord’s day as He has asked us to do? —P. W. B

Lest I forget Gethsemane;
Lest I forget Thine agony;
Lest I forget Thy love for me,
Lead me to Calvary. —Jennie E. Hussey

DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 8; Jeremiah 42:7 to 43:13; Hebrews 11:1-16

Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that showeth mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12:8

One of the examples given to us by the risen Christ is that of showing mercy. There are two ways of doing this—either with an element of reluctance and self righteousness, or to do it in a way that gives both parties joy, and brings them closer. Remember that, but for the grace of God, it could have been you or me in the wrong. —Brian Russell

To labour and to love,
To pardon and endure,
To lift thy heart to God above,
And keep thy conscience pure. —Anne Bronte

DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 6:24 to 7:20; Jer. 41 to 42:6; Heb. 10:19-39

What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31

These are two questions, which, if they don’t render us speechless will cause us to respond with the simple words, “nothing” and “no one”. What more can we add to God’s own assessment of His great work toward us? (v. 30) Nothing! And who can bring a single charge against God’s elect, since it is God who justifies? (v. 33) No one! Not the devil, not the world, not all the enemies of God can do that. I am His and He is mine and His banner over me is love—forever! —Mark Kolchin

Loved with everlasting love, led by grace that love to know;
Gracious Spirit from above, Thou hast taught me it is so!
O this full and perfect peace! O this transport all divine!
In a love which cannot cease, I am His, and He is mine. —G. Robinson

More Than Just A Messiah: Jesus of Nazareth by Bryan W. Sheldon

An examination of the deity of Christ as revealed in the Bible
The life of Jesus of Nazareth has divided history into two.  His influence has been felt all around the globe. His followers number millions. His teaching has guided nations.  What was there about Him that should have such an enduring effect?  The key to the answer lies in who He was. The Church has long held that He was God revealed in the flesh, “the Son of God, the only-begotten of the Father, that is, of the substance of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one substance with the Father.” This belief has come under attack once again. This modest volume offers some Biblical evidence in support of the doctrine of the deity of Christ in the hope that some will find it helpful in repelling the arguments of those who wish to diminish the One who died for the salvation of sinners, at the same time strengthening an appreciation of the greatness of our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.

DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 6:1-23; Jeremiah 39-40; Hebrews 10:1-18

And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. Genesis 5:24

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first. 1 Thessalonians 4:16

Genesis 5 has been called “the obituary page of the Bible” for repeatedly we read, “and he died!” However, everything changes when we come to saintly Enoch. The enemy, death, is interrupted! Here was a man “who walked side by side with God,” in a corrupt society until one day “He was not, for God took him.” What a glorious hope for the believer! Live expectantly in the hope of His imminent return.—James Comte

Come, and begin Thy reign of everlasting peace;
Come take the kingdom to Thyself, great King of righteousness.—H. Bonar

DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 5; Jeremiah 38; Hebrews 9:15-28

Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see Him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory. 1 Peter 1:8

It seems an incredible mystery that we love a person whom we have never seen. John gives insight into that kind of love by expressing that we love Him because He first loved us. He tells us also, “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins,” (1 John 4:10). The greatest exhibition of love was fully expressed on the cross at Calvary. Christ died for us. It is by believing this we can rejoice with incredible joy! Are you a believer today? —Jim Paul

Teach me thus Thy steps to trace, strong to follow in Thy grace,
Learning how to love from Thee, loving Him Who first loved me.—J. E. Leeson

DAILY READINGS: 2 Kings 4; Jeremiah 37; Hebrews 9:1-14

For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish. 2 Corinthians 2:15

My sister-in-law was standing in front of me at a family picnic when she suddenly turned around to face me. With a puzzled look she exclaimed, “Oh, I thought it was your wife.” Why had she thought that? Because my wife and I had been in each other’s company earlier and her fragrance was on me. Does the fragrance of the Lord Jesus' helping hand, His loving heart, His healing touch or His encouraging word pervade our presence wherever we go? —Jerry Proctor

Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave;
Weep o’er the erring one, lift up the fallen,
Tell them of Jesus, the mighty to save. —Fanny Crosby
