Deuteronomy 26:16-27:26; Amos 1:1-2:16; Luke 13:22-35

I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. Psalm 101:3

Whether you need to sweep it, crush it, burn it, or flee from it; if the Spirit whispers the Lord’s disapproval, get rid of it! How many times do we read of Israel burning their idols, crushing them to powder, and scattering them into the brook Kidron? The New Testament speaks of cutting off unrighteous hands and feet and plucking out guilty eyes! No remnant of the offending object is to be left intact. God takes sin’s defilement seriously. So must we. —Eunice Free

Would you flee from sin and serve the Lord?
Be ready when He comes;
He will soon appear with His reward,
Be ready when He comes. —Daniel O. Teasley

Deuteronomy 25:1-26:15; Jonah 3:1-4:11; Luke 13:1-21

Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. Romans 7:20

It was D. L. Moody who said, “I have more trouble with D. L. Moody than with any other man I know.” The fact that we as believers sin at times does not mean that we are not saved. Although on conversion the Holy Spirit  immediately indwells us, the old nature— the old Adam—still resides in us as well. This means the believer is in a constant battle to do what is right and to please the Lord. However, never forget that the Holy Spirit will always succeed if we let Him. One day, in glory, there will be no more trials and temptations. Praise the Lord! —Brian Russell

Deuteronomy 23:9-24:22; Jonah 1:1-2:10; Luke 12:41-59

Your eyes will see the King in His beauty. Isaiah 33:17 NKJV

“When the soul beholds beauty, it grows wings.” So writes one who urges us to lift up our eyes from the “small and sordid things” at our feet and to train our minds to behold, to pause, to consider deeply, to gaze intently, to saturate our souls by contemplating any one of the many splendored graces of our Lord Jesus and His creation. Then we can join with the psalmist in unceasing praise. —Marilyn MacMullen

He gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell,
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well.  —C. F. Alexande

Deuteronomy 22:1-23:8; Joel 3:1-21; Luke 12:22-40

And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just. Luke 23:50

The final act of our Lord’s work at Calvary was steeped in love and dignity because of the tender actions of those who loved Him. Joseph demonstrated kindness by giving Jesus an honourable burial; Nicodemus brought myrrh and aloes to embalm Jesus’ body. Women watched and wept, expressing sorrow for the Lord. As an act of love, they planned what they would do to show their devotion to Him. “Very early in the morning,” they went eagerly to honour the Lord and to show their affection for Him. May we come and do similarly today. —Gaius C. Goff

Oh, what joy Thy presence gives us, calling up our hearts to Thee! —William J. Hocking

Deuteronomy 20:1-21:23; Joel 2:1-32; Luke 12:1-21

Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Matt. 1:1
Son of Man. Matthew 8:20 NKJV
Jesus…Son of God. Matthew 8:29 NKJV

These four titles indicate heritage and prospect. As the Son of David, He is the heir, the One who will sit on the throne of David forever. As the Son of Abraham, He is the seed who will fulfill the promises made to Abraham about the land. As the Son of Man, He is the One who will restore what was lost due to sin, thus the heir to this world. As Son of God, He is the heir of all things. And, wonder of wonders, we are joint heirs with Christ. —Gary McBride

Jesus shall reign wher-e’er the sun,
Does its successive journeys run,
His kingdom stretch from shore to shore,
Till moons shall wax and wane no more. —Isaac Watts

Deuteronomy 18:9-19:21; Joel 1:1-20; Luke 11:37-54

The heart is deceitful…and desperately wicked. Jeremiah 17:9
Behold, I am vile. Job 40:4
I abhor myself, and repent. Job 42:6
I know that in me…dwelleth no good thing. Romans 7:18

Was Job’s changed attitude in response to past sins only? Or had his eyes been opened to see himself, for who he was before Almighty God? While the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from every sin and justifies us before God, our nature has not changed. There are hard temptations from the outside, but the most difficult challenges lie within us. Praise God when we see Him, we shall be like Him, but not until then. The desperate need of the day is to judge inward, as we look upward. —Doug Lewis

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see. —J. Newton

Deuteronomy 17:1-18:8; Obadiah 1:1-21; Luke 11:14-36

As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness. Psalm 17:15 NKJV

We all face times of trial and difficulty as we travel on life’s journey. But as we face those times, all who have trusted Christ as Saviour have access into the very presence of Almighty God. David prayed earnestly that the Lord would “hear and attend his prayer” (v. 1), “hold up his steps and stop him from slipping” (v. 5) and “keep him as the apple of his eye” (v. 8). He ends his prayer with the full assurance that one day he would see the Lord’s face! David’s God
is our God. He delights when we come to Him with prayers that rejoice in our blessed assurance in Him. —Ray Jones

Deuteronomy 16:1-22; Song of Solomon 6:10-8:14; Luke 11:1-13

Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands for us; Yes, establish the work of our hands. Psalm 90:17 NKJV

God’s beauty will be reflected in our lives if we permit Him to lead us according to His purposes for us. By staying close to Him, the fragrance of His presence will go with us. Just as the sweet nectar attracts bees to the flowers, a kind demeanour will become an attractive trait in our Christian character. Others will marvel when we act in a Christ-like manner under pressure and be drawn to knowing the Saviour through our personal testimony. —Olive Wilson

Beautiful Saviour! Lord of all the nations! Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honour, praise, adoration, now and forevermore be Thine. —Anonymous

Deuteronomy 14:22-15:23; Song of Solomon 5:2-6:9; Luke 10:25-42

But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing. 2 Thessalonians 3:13

The Christian life reveals itself in works of kindness and doing good to others. The greatest good we can do for others is to share the life-giving message of the Gospel with them, but it can be wearying. People may be unresponsive. They may criticize or condemn us or impute false motives. We can be misunderstood, mocked, humiliated, and even persecuted. The Apostle Paul knew all those experiences and more, as he endured tiredness, hunger, thirst, and
imprisonment. Yet he insisted that we must not be weary or give up. The motto of our lives should be that we never give up in faithfully serving the Lord. —Paul Young

O soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see?
There’s light for a look at the Saviour, and life more abundant and free!  —H. H. Lemmell

Deuteronomy 13:1-14:21; Song of Solomon 3:6-5:1; Luke 10:1-24

We urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus…how you ought to walk and to please God. 1 Thessalonians 4:1 NKJV
And Enoch walked with God. Genesis 5:24 NKJV

Walk with God! To walk with someone implies harmony, fellowship, and communication. Tremendous resources lie in walking with God. You will be blessed and be a blessing. Regardless of our circumstances, this spiritual walk is always available to us. We can walk with God until, like Enoch, the Lord takes us home. —Brian Gunning

When we walk with the Lord, in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.  —John Henry Sammis
