Description
Polycarp was a disciple of the Apostle John and Bishop of the Smyrna (a city in modern-day Turkey). During the days of the Roman Empire, persecution of Christians was rife and many faced death rather than deny their faith in Jesus. It was a challenging time to be a Christian. Polycarp’s strong faith in Jesus Christ helped this elderly Christian face his enemies with steadfastness and courage.
When asked to curse Christ in order to save himself from martyrdom, Polycarp answered, “Eighty and six years have I served him, and he has done me no wrong. How then can I blaspheme my king who saved me?”
